Tjiuma, 1year 3months old was born with a bilateral cleft lip and a cleft palate.Being from the Himba traditional group - his mother hardly ever can to the clinic if Tjiuma was ill.
Infortantely - or fortunately - Tjiuma had an infection in his lungs due to the difficulty in feeding for children born with cleft lips and palates. His mother, Japahewa took him to clinic in Opuwo and was later tranferred to Oshakati. The doctors in Oshakati later referred him to Windhoek Katutura Hospital. At Katutura hospital - dr Gawaseb realised that he could help Tjiuma further by contacting the foundation to see what we could do to help him.
After contacting Dr Kruger - she agreed to operate him on the 28th of May 2010. After completing all the necessary documents, we tranferred Tjiuma to the Central Hospital where the operation was to take place. Thanks to Dr Kruger, all went well and Tjiuma is now recovering awaiting his operation to close the palate. |
